GROSSMAN

Benedict GROSSMAN (?-bef 24 Sep 1839) was a very early settler (abt 1797) in Butler County, PA. Other Grossman researchers identify Benedict as the son of Simon GROSSMAN (abt 1720-?) and Margretha ? (abt 1725-?) who came to America from the Palatine region of Germany in 1749. Benedict was supposedly born during the voyage. There are land and other records for him in Adams/York Cos., PA, and Montgomery Co., MD. He had a sister Mary (abt 1756-13 Sep 1848) who was married to Matthias SHROYER, a Revolutionary soldier. Other siblings may be  Simon (?-?), Rosa (?-?) (or is this Mary?), Maria Margretha (17 Oct 1752-?), and perhaps John (?-?)

Before 1797 he married Elizabeth "Betsey" SEIBERT/SIEBERT/STIVERT. Elizabeth may have formerly been married to ? GRAVES. Butler County histories and family legend states that Betsey was captured by the Indians and held in captivity 1756-1763. She was supposedly scalped but survived. Documentation discovered so far tends to support the legend, but it has not been conclusively proven.

Possible children of Benedict and Elizabeth:

Polly (1784-?) m. Robert MCCALLEN

Elizabeth (bef 1784-aft 1850) m. Robert BLACK

Jacob (1787-?) m. Susannah SANDERSON

Simon (1788-1849) m. Elizabeth CAROTHERS

Benjamin (7 Jun 1789-23 Sep 1878) m. Susannah MCANALLEN 13 Nov 1811. He served in the War of 1812.

Catherine (?-?) m. Jacob KISSINGER
